Overijssel 1701 gulden
This specimen was lot 71757 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Overyssel. Gulden, 1701. NGC AU-50. This beautifully toned example exhibits a decent strike with even wear displaying rich mottled patina with an iridescent sheen that pops out when rotated in the light." Each province of the Netherlands minted its own coins, sometimes only sporadically. Others minted some denominations and not others. While Overijssel minted almost no gold in the eighteenth century, it did strike an extensive series of silver one gulden in several subtypes. This one, KM 63.1, has a rose mintmark and was struck 1698-1710. A crane mintmark was used 1715-23, 1733-38, 1748-49; a lily mintmark was used 1722-25, 1733-38, 1748-49, 1761-69.
