Künker sale 293, lot 1075

This specimen was lot 1075 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €140 (about US$189 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NÜRNBERG, STADT, 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1766, mit Titel Josefs II. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich +. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, half convention thaler of 1766, struck in the name of Joseph II. Very attractive example, extremely fine or better.)"

This type is noted for 1766 and 1768. The relative rarity of German minors such as this half thaler is much less well documented than that of the thalers and ducats. Major rarities sell cheaply for lack of interest. Nuremberg was mediatized by Napoleon in 1806 and handed over to Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Kellner 354, KM-355.
