Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1215

This specimen was lot 1215 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €40,800 (about US$45,215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Extremely Rare 1/2 Speciedaler in Appealing Mint State Condition, NORWAY. 1/2 Speciedaler, 1665. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-61. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner (FG). EXTREMELY RARE with only about 10 examples known, this bright and wholesome Mint State example is commendably struck up, with crisp and well-articulated fine details. Touched with the occasional splash of color, the surfaces have a nice and wholly original appearance. Only hints of handling consistent for the grade are seen, yet the alluring nature remains unimpeded. Ex: Johan G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 1493 in his collection."

This type was struck 1666-67. Double, single and eighth specie dalers exist for 1665. Numista states nine examples are known of this date.
