Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1210
SB924-1210r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1210 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €66,000 (about US$73,141 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Handsome Mint State 2 Speciedaler with Light Orange Toning, NORWAY. 2 Speciedaler, 1664. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-61. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner (FG). Obverse engraved by Johan Blum. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE, and likely the best of only a handful in private collections, this stunning and weighty issue delivers a soft brilliance that rises from the surfaces. The fine engraving is well-laid on the flan, with an edifying clarity and very little left wanting in terms of details. Only a few instances of contact are seen, with no major faults capturing the eye. A specimen that is rich with a gravitational magnetism, and as such all collectors such feel a tug of excitement when this tremendous example crosses the auction block."

This double specie daler was struck in 1664 along with another double specie daler (KM 52/Dav-3613). On the one shown here, the king appears to be wearing a napkin around his neck; on the other, the king wears a sash over his armor. Single and triple specie dalers also exist for 1664.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 57.55 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 57.60 g.
