Norway 1646-PG 1/2 specie daler
This specimen was lot 1185 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €10,800 (about US$11,969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Handsome and Moderately Circulated Example with Deep Cabinet Tone, NORWAY. 1/2 Speciedaler, 1646. Christiania Mint. Christian IV. NGC EF-45. Mintmaster: Peter Grüner (PG). This RARE coin with its rich, dark, multicolor cabinet toning has the appearance of being in the higher end of the numeric grade. When coupled with the fact that very few have been offered in auction in the last decades, the desirability becomes resoundingly evident. Ex: Johan G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 1066 in his collection."
This half specie daler was struck without interruption 1629-47. Numista notes a 1646/45 overdate.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.62 g, 0.882 fine silver, this specimen 14.37 g.
