Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1186
SB924-1186r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1186 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €10,800 (about US$11,969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Beautifully Toned and Most Handsome Lightly Circulated 1/2 Speciedaler, NORWAY. 1/2 Speciedaler, 1648. Christiania Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-53. Mintmaster: Peter Grüner (PG). This VERY RARE one-year type, struck on a larger planchet, is exquisitely toned. While it does come up for sale from time to time, this lovely high-grade specimen is sure to turn some heads. Ex: August K. Krautwald Collection (Private Sale - 1916)."

This half specie daler was struck 1648 only. It reflects a reduction from 14.62 g, 0.882 fine silver, to 14.36 g, 0.875 fine silver, a devaluation of 2.5%. Since the regime did not change the design, we presume it tried to keep the change a secret.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.36 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 14.04 g.
