This specimen was lot 21278 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Penny, 1958. NGC PROOF-63 BN. A coin with aesthetic qualities so stunning that it renders the assigned grade nearly meaningless. Virtually flawless liquid mirrored fields with intense aquamarine and cobalt blue coloration dominating the surfaces." New Zealand did not receive her own coinage until 1933, British coins being used heretofore. Issue of pennies and half pennies did not begin until 1940. Pennies were struck for Elizabeth II, 1953-65. In 1956, the obverse hub was modified to sharpen the sleeve of Her Majesty's dress and the denomination was terminated upon decimalization in 1965.
