South Africa 1958 penny
This specimen was lot 23588 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Eleven Piece Proof Set, 1958. Comprises Farthing (PCGS PR66BN), Half Penny (PCGS PR64RB), Penny (PCGS PR66+BN), Threepence (PCGS PR67), Sixpence (PCGS PR66), Shilling (PCGS PR66), 2 Shillings (PCGS PR65), 2½ Shillings (PCGS PR66), 5 Shillings (PCGS PR66), Half Pound (PCGS PR65) and Pound (PCGS PR66). All are toned." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1953-60 along with a bronze farthing (KM 44) and half penny (KM 45). It is common.
