This specimen was part of lot 4385 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), which sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 1/2 Pound & Pound, 1958. 2 piece proof set. Mintage of only 515 sets. PCGS PROOF-65 & PROOF-64. EX: Oldergui Collection." This type was minted in small numbers 1953-60 but as all are in collector's hands, it obtains little premium.

Recorded mintage: 515 proofs.

Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .117 troy oz AGW.
