This specimen was lot 6395 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Penny, 1958-(M). Melbourne Mint. Elizabeth II. PCGS PROOF-65 Brown. A boldly struck Proof with full glossy surfaces, medium brown patina, and streaks of faint rainbow toning on both sides." None of the proof pennies of the fifties are common but the 1955 and 1956 proofs from Perth are the key. The Melbourne mint also issued proofs. The absence of a dot after the word "PENNY" marks this as a Melbourne product.
Recorded mintage: 10,012,000 + 1,506 proofs + 14,428,000 from Perth.
Specification: 9.45 g, bronze, 30.8 mm diameter.
