NZ SB120-23401r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23401 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Shilling, 1958. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. KM-27.2. The catalog description[1] noted, "Broken back" variety. Fully lustrous and enchantingly toned, this stunning Gem presents the "broken back" variety, whereby certain elements in the back and torso of the Maori warrior are not fully struck up. Tied with just two others as the finest in the PCGS census. From the Fenton Collection." The copper-nickel issues of Elizabeth II are divided into "no shoulder fold" (1953-55) and "with shoulder fold" (1956-65, shown here). In a few cases, "no shoulder fold" dies were used in error in 1956 and 1957, creating rarities; otherwise, most dates are common. The "Broken Back" variety is rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper-nickel, 23.62 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-27.2.
