NZ SB120-23404r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23404 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $70. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Penny, 1957. PCGS MS-65 Red Gold Shield. A fully mint red example of the type with satiny luster, this stunning Gem is likely the finest one will see and, rather accordingly, is tied with just three other specimens for the highest grade achieved at PCGS. From the Fenton Collection." The copper issues of Elizabeth II are divided into "no shoulder fold" (1953-55) and "with shoulder fold" (1956-65, shown here). In a few cases, "no shoulder fold" dies were used in error in 1956 and 1957, creating rarities; otherwise, most dates are common.

Recorded mintage: 2,400,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 9.6 g, bronze, 30.8 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-24.2.
