New Zealand 1935 6 pence
This specimen was lot 23336 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. 6 Pence, 1935. PCGS MS-65+ Gold Shield. KM-2. Offering the lowest mintage in this 4 year series, the present Gem features dazzling brilliance and an enchanting tone. Quality that is unlikely to be rivaled, this piece is unsurprisingly the finest graded in the PCGS census, with just one other at the base MS-65 level. From the Fenton Collection." Coinage was first struck for New Zealand in 1933 and this type, struck 1933-36, quickly proved popular, being issued until the end of sterling coinage in 1965. The denomination was converted to copper-nickel in 1947. The reverse depicts a huia bird. Most of the silver issues are expensive in high grade.
Recorded mintage: 560,000 + 364 proofs, the toughest date.
