New Zealand 1936 6 pence
This specimen was lot 23337 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. 6 Pence, 1936. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. A captivating and brilliant Gem, this final year of issue for George V presents tremendous luster and a golden-gray tone throughout. Tied with just one other example for the finest certified by PCGS. From the Fenton Collection." Coinage was first struck for New Zealand in 1933 and this type, struck 1933-36, quickly proved popular, being issued until the end of sterling coinage in 1965. The denomination was converted to copper-nickel in 1947. The reverse depicts a huia bird. Most of the silver issues are expensive in high grade.
