Netherlands East Indies 1794 duit KM-159
This specimen was lot 72589 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Dutch East India Company. Zeeland. Duit, 1794. NGC MS-62 Brown. Incredibly appealing and alluring for the type, this delightful, nearly-choice specimen offers chocolate brown surfaces with some hints of red, all while a degree of minty luster still remains in the protected areas." Zeeland issued this type 1792-94. An earlier type with a slightly different shield (KM 152.3) was struck 1753-92. Besides Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Holland and Westfriesland struck duits for the East Indies. Most dates are common. Gold and silver presentation strikes exist but not for 1794.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
