SB621-72571r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72571 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Dutch East India Company. Gelderland. 1/2 Duit, 1789. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. Somewhat crudely engraved as is typical for the type, this warm brown, wholesome example presents great originality." Gelderland issued this type 1788-89. This and the subsequent KM 56 seem to be the only time Gelderland minted half duits for the East Indies. Besides Gelderland, half duits were made by Utrecht, Zeeland, Holland and Westfriesland. Most dates are common. Silver presentation strikes exist for 1789.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.36-1.60 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-55.
