Netherlands East Indies 1789 duit KM-152.3
This specimen was lot 118 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,832 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Duit, PROVINCIALE MUNTEN - Duit 1789, Copper, Zeeland Gekroond provinciewapen zonder omschrift. Kz. ✶ burcht ✶ / VOC / jaartal. Kabelrand in plaats van de gebruikelijke gladde rand. RRR NGC MS63 BN. (copper duit of 1789, provincial coinage, Zeeland mint. Obverse: crowned provincial arms; reverse: tower, monogram and date. Reeded edge instead of the usual plain edge, graded NGC MS63 BN.)"
Copper duits were struck for the Netherlands East Indies at several Dutch mints in 1789, including Utrecht (KM 111.1), Westfriesland (KM 131), Zeeland (shown here), Gelderland (KM 50.2) and Holland (KM 70). Some were also struck in silver for presentation. Zeeland produced this type 1753-56, 1764-73, 1777-80, 1784-92. This example realized over one hundred times the catalog value, likely because of the edge variety.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.62 g, copper.
