Zeeland 1797 duit
This specimen was lot 75551 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Batavian Republic. Zeeland. Duit, 1797/6. NGC MS-64 Brown. Boldly struck and attractive, this near Gem example displays lovely chocolate brown patina with hints of original mint red in the protected areas." This duit was struck by the province of Zeeland not for the Netherlands East Indies but for the metropolis. Duits intended for the East Indies had a "VOC" on the reverse (KM 159). This type was struck 1792-94 for the United Provinces (as KM 105) and 1795-97 for the Batavian Republic (as KM 5).
