Schulman 379-597r.jpg

This specimen was lot 597 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €100 (about US$129 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN - WILLEM III 1849-1890. 1 Gulden. 1863 Hoofd naar rechts door J. P. Schouberg. Mmt. zwaard, mt. mercuriusstaf., Silver. Prachtig +. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William III, 1849-90, one gulden of 1863, head right. Privy marks sword and Mercury's staff. Extremely fine or better.)"

This type was struck 1850-67 in substantial numbers, tho it is scarce in nice condition. No one gulden coins were struck between 1867 and 1892. Curiously, while the half, one and 2½ gulden pieces were 0.945 fine silver, the five, ten and twenty-five cent issues were only 0.640 fine.

Recorded mintage: 7,986,113.

Specification: 10 g, 0.945 fine silver, .303 troy oz ASW, 28 mm diameter. This specimen 10.01 g.

Catalog reference: KM 93, Sch-615.
