This specimen was lot 73315 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 1/2 Gulden, 1863. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: sword. William III. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. A rather deeply toned example, this specimen presents some subtle, underlying brilliance along with only light handling on the higher points of William's hair and beard." This type was struck 1850-68 in substantial numbers, tho it is scarce in nice condition. No half gulden coins were struck between 1868 and 1898. Curiously, while the half, one and 2½ gulden pieces were 0.945 fine silver, the five, ten and twenty-five cent issues were only 0.640 fine.

Recorded mintage: 5,152,064.

Specification: 5 g, 0.945 fine silver, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 92, Sch-630.
