Netherlands 1850 gulden
This specimen was lot 105 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €13,000 (about US$18,318 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Gulden, KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN - WILLEM III 1849-90, 1850 Hoofd naar rechts, door J. P. Schouberg. Kz. gekroond wapen, geflankeerd door waardeaanduiding en met onder het wapen de aanduiding 100 c. Mmt. zwaard, mt. mercuriusstaf., Silver. Uit de Zeeuwse Leeuw collectie. RRR. Geslagen met gepolijste stempels. Diepe, donkere velden en gematteerde details. Vrijwel FDC. (gulden of 1850, kingdom of the Netherlands, William III, 1849-90. Obverse: head right by J. P. Schouberg. Reverse: crowned arms divides the value, with "100 c." below. sword mintmark, Mercury's staff privy mark, from the Zeeland lion collection. Struck from proof dies, deep, dark fields and frosted details. Virtually FDC.)"
This type was struck 1850-67 in substantial numbers. Some dates are common but this is a rare date. It has a reeded edge instead of the lettered edge used on circulation strikes. No one gulden coins were struck between 1867 and 1892.
