Netherlands 1850 10 gulden
This specimen was lot 3227 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $15,862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 10 Gulden, 1850. NGC PROOF-65 CAMEO. VERY RARE proof only first year of issue for a two year type. Flashing undeniably hard mirror proof surfaces with light orange toning contrasting nicely with the lightly frosted devices. A couple of tiny contact marks in fields which are only to be found under magnification, no other signs of handling. The second finest certified example with one piece graded one point higher." The kingdom of the Netherlands was formed from the former United Provinces by the Treaty of Vienna in 1815. The house of Nassau, former Stadtholders, were promoted to king. This type, issued 1850-51 along with five and twenty gulden, is so rare as to practically be a pattern. The five and twenty gulden were never adopted for regular issue and the ten gulden is best known from KM 106 issued 1876-89.
