Nassau 1833 thaler Dav-743
This specimen was lot 31029 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Nassau. Wilhelm Taler 1833 MS66 NGC, Wiesbaden mint. A quality candidate for the conditionally-conscious collector, decorated in allover mottled toning of olive-gray, amber and pewter and punctuated by underlying mint luster. Bested by a single other example submitted to NGC. Ex. Rockaway Collection (Stack's Bowers, January 2015, Lot 673). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This state was formed in 1816 by the union of Nassau-Usingen and Nassau-Weilburg. In 1866, the duchy was swallowed up by Prussia and the coinage ended, tho one branch of the family now occupies the throne of the Netherlands. This type was struck 1831-33 and 1836-37 to the kronenthaler standard. Mintages (where known) are small but the latter three dates are reasonably available. The kronenthaler was originally struck by the Austrians for their territories in Belgium but abandoned by them during the Napoleonic Wars. Bavaria used this standard until the 1830's.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
Specification: 29.53 g, 0.871 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, lettered edge.
