Künker sale 293, lot 1055
Nassau in 1786

This specimen was lot 1055 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €420 (about US$566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NASSAU, HERZOGTUM, Wilhelm, 1816-1839. Ku.-Kreuzer 1818. Variante mit SCHEID MÜNZ in der Vorderseitenumschrift. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. (Germany, duchy of Nassau, William, 1816-39, copper kreuzer of 1818, variety with SCHEID MÜNZ in obverse legend. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The duke of Nassau issued substantial numbers of kreuzer up until 1863. Some were billon and others were copper, as here. This type was struck 1817-18 and is a better type. In 1866, the duchy was swallowed up by Prussia and the coinage ended, tho one branch of the family now occupies the throne of the Netherlands.

Recorded mintage: 84,000.

Specification: copper, 22-24 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: AKS 51 Anm.; J-5, KM 43.
