Mysore AM1216/6 2 pagoda Fr-1355
This specimen was lot 487 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $13,310. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Independent States. Mysore. Tipu Sultan. AH 1197-1202/AD 1787-1799. AV Sadiqi – Double Pagoda. Patan (Seringapatan) mint. Triply dated RY 6, cyclic year 42, and AM 1216 (AD 1787/8). In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. A choice uncirculated example of this impressive gold coinage. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, November 1983." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj.
