This specimen was lot 543 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Babur, 1526-1530, AR shahrukhi, Badakhshan, AH9(29), Rahman, similar to Rahman-06 to 08, but different central cartouche and obverse legends somewhat differently arranged; date off flan at the bottom of the obverse, VF, RR. Unpublished type, but an inferior specimen was sold in the Oswal Auction 66, Lot 151 (same dies, date off)." This was issued by Babar while he was king of Kabul and before becoming Mughal emperor. Badakhshan, where this coin was struck, is today divided between Afghanistan and Tajikistan and is considered the heartland of Turcoman culture. The shahrukhi was originally a silver coin minted by Shah Rukh of the Timurid Empire (r. 1405-47) and was adopted by the early Mughal Emperors (Babur, Humayan and Akbar). It was eventually superseded by the rupee.
