Steve Album sale 54, lot 2176

This specimen was lot 2176 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Babur, 3rd reign, 1504-1526, AR shahrukhi, NM, AH925, without the additional title ghazi, struck before Babur's advance into India in 1526. Rahman has suggested that this type, always without mint name, was likely struck at Kabul." This was issued by Babar while he was king of Kabul and before becoming Mughal emperor. Kabul, where this coin was struck, is today the capital of Afghanistan. The shahrukhi was originally a silver coin minted by Shah Rukh of the Timurid Empire (r. 1405-47) and was adopted by the early Mughal Emperors (Babur, Humayan and Akbar). It was eventually superseded by the rupee.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.5-5.0 g, silver, this specimen 4.50 g.

Catalog reference: Rahman-52 (same dies), A-2462.2.
