Montreal (1837) sou token
This specimen was lot 22269 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Montreal. Sou, ND (1837). NGC AU-55 BN. By Joseph Roy. Struck on a thin flan. RARE in this state of preservation. Mr. Joseph Roy was a dry goods merchant in Montreal. The tokens were condemned by the press, because many of them were lightweight, despite Mr. Roy's specific instructions to the minter to make them the same weight as the then current bank tokens. Well struck with attractive chocolate brown patina. With old collectors ticket." The SCWC notes that the Bank of Montreal, the Banque du Peuple and City Bank were granted the right to issue halfpenny and penny tokens, which right was exercised 1837-39, 1842-45 and 1852. However, when official provincial coinage was issued in 1858, decimal coinage similar to United States coins was chosen.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
