This specimen was lot 30421 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Province Du. Bas Canada Deux Sous copper Penny Token 1837, Bank of Montreal, MS65 Red and Brown NGC. A near-flawless strike with significant remaining mint-red luster. The surfaces are free of notable contact marks and the only imperfections are minor spots that detract little from the pleasing overall appearance. A superior example of the type." The SCWC notes that the Bank of Montreal, the Banque du Peuple and City Bank were granted the right to issue halfpenny and penny tokens, which right was exercised 1837-39, 1842-45 and 1852. However, when official provincial coinage was issued in 1858, decimal coinage similar to United States coins was chosen. This specimen sold for over eight times the catalog value.
