Canada 1858 5 cents
This is a fairly common date of a type struck in London and Birmingham for Canada 1858 and 1870-1901. The first specimen was lot 34477 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $217. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 5 Cents, 1858. PCGS VF-30. Large date. Scarce type." The second specimen was lot 42056 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $13,200. The catalog description[2] noted, "Large '5'/Small '5' Variety, CANADA. 5 Cents, 1858. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-65. Variety with large 5 over small 5 in denomination. A tremendous Gem from the first year of issue, this transfixing minor presents clear evidence of a smaller 5 beneath a larger one in the denomination, all while some olive-russet toning offers an alluring pullaway effect among the legends. The finest certified by a massive margin (the next finest of the variety at PCGS being a FINE-12), making this a tremendous opportunity for the specialist to acquire an item of singular quality." The small date is much more available.
Recorded mintage: 1,500,000 (all varieties).
Specification: 1.16 grams, 0.925 fine silver, 25.4 mm diameter, reeded edge.
