Magdalen Island 1815 penny token
This specimen was lot 24361 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $616.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "Magdalen Island. George III Era Penny Token 1815, VF35 NGC. Nicer than most of the survivors with much of the important detail remaining and even, deep brown surface coloration. An always popular type due to the wonderful seal illustrations on the token's obverse." The Magdalen Islands, today part of Quebec, lay in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The token depicts the islands' main industries, sealing and cod fishing. The SCWC notes that this token was illegally issued and cost the issuer, Sir Isaac Coffin, his grant of the islands.
