Nova Scotia 1814 1/2 penny token
The first specimen was lot 1711 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "NOVA SCOTIA: Province, AE halfpenny token, 1814, thicker upper cravat, SC of SCOTIA are far apart, left ship is smaller, small obverse field dig, VG-F, R-9 (Courteau), ex Donald G. Partrick Collection (with envelope), ex Warren Baker (with envelope), ex Lees." The second specimen was lot 70412 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[2] noted, "CANADA. Nova Scotia. Halifax. Copper 1/2 Penny Token, 1814. PCGS EF-40. Obverse: Uniformed bust of field marshal Wellington left; Reverse: Britannia seated left, holding olive branch in extended hand and trident. Despite some light circulation, this pretty piece yet renders strong details and even some mint glossiness. From the Collection of Richard Rossa, formerly of Rossa and Tanenbaum." Wikipedia comments, "Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke, 1st Baronet KCB (1776-1841) was a distinguished officer in the British Royal Navy. During his lifetime he was often referred to as Broke of the Shannon, a reference to his notable command of HMS Shannon in the War of 1812. His most famous military achievement was defeating and capturing the American frigate, USS Chesapeake."
