Molson 1837 sou token

This specimen was lot 29427 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lower Canada. Molson Sou Token 1837, MS63 Brown NGC. Reeded, thick flan. From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens." The SCWC notes that the Bank of Montreal, the Banque du Peuple and City Bank were granted the right to issue halfpenny and penny tokens, which right was exercised 1837-39, 1842-45 and 1852. However, when official provincial coinage was issued in 1858, decimal coinage similar to United States coins was chosen.
