Modena (1635)-GFM 4 scudi d'oro Fr-778
This specimen was lot 21243 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Modena. 4 Scudi d'Oro, ND (1629-58)-GFM. Francesco I d'Este. NGC AU-50. Mintmaster Gian Francesco Manfredi. A somewhat crudely struck example (as is typical for this issue) with light but clear peripheral lettering, good remaining luster, and no significant marks in the fields. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." This rare type is also known dated 1632 and 1634. It was accompanied by a double scudi d'oro (Fr-779) and 8 scudi d'oro (Fr-777). The duke issued an extensive series of coins in the seventeenth century, all rare today.
