Sincona sale 90, lot 1381

This specimen was lot 1381 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$13,214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Modena, Francesco I. d'Este, 1629-1658. 4 Scudi d'oro 1632, Modena. Münzmeister Josefo Teseo (1631-1637). . FRAN. I. MVT. REG. E. C. DVX. VIII. Gepanzerte Büste mit spanischem Kragen nach rechts. Rv. AVERTISTEN: IRAM: INDIGNATIONIS. Die Heilige Jungfrau im Anbetung des Kindes, im Abschnitt .1632. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (Italy, duchy of Modena, Francesco I d'Este, 1629-58, four gold scudi of 1632, Modena mint. Obverse: bust right in Spanish collar; reverse: the Virgin Mary and Child, date in exergue. Extremely rare, Very fine, Small scratches.)"

This rare type is also known dated 1632 and 1634. It was accompanied by a double scudi d'oro (Fr-779) and 8 scudi d'oro (Fr-777). The duke issued an extensive series of coins in the seventeenth century, all rare today.
