Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72165

This specimen was lot 72165 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1901-Zs Z. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS MS-67. A deceivingly SCARCE Zacatecas minor denomination, hailing from a relatively small mintage of 40,000 pieces and the first example we can recall having offered of the date. If that were not enough, the present example is extraordinarily well preserved, with nary a distracting mark to be seen over the richly toned surfaces. Evidently from a pair of dies in near-terminal state, with several cracks apparent on either side." This type was struck 1898-1905 at the Zacatecas mint. None of the mintages are large but all are priced quite modestly. This specimen realized 48 times the catalog value. Assayer FZ served 1886-1904. The mintage of silver five centavos ceased with the reform of 1905.
