Ponterio sale 150, lot 9200

This coin was lot 9200 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1901-ZsAZ. EXTREMELY RARE. Cleaned, VERY FINE." History does not record the reason for the appearance of assayer AZ who appears nowhere else in the coinage. The date 1901-ZsFZ is common and comprises just about the whole mintage cited below.

Recorded mintage: 5,706,000 (including assayer FZ).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
