The first specimen was lot 31667 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Hookneck 2 Reales 1824 Do-RL, XF40 NGC. Variety with mintmark as Do. Very lightly toned and original with excellent eye appeal. Seldom seen in this quality." This type was struck at the Durango and Mexico City mints during 1824. During this period, the other branch mints continued to produce coins of the colonial type. Numismatic authors have written panegyrics to the beauty of the "hookneck" design but it was abandoned quickly for the familiar facing eagle reverse used until the 1890's, most likely because the hookneck design struck up poorly. The second specimen was lot 73020 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,220. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. "Hookneck" 2 Reales, 1824-D RL. Durango Mint. NGC VF Details--Cleaned. HO-Type 1. Variety with dot before '2R'. Variety with 'D' no 'o' mintmark. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors."
