Stack's Bowers ANA sale, lot 41340
SB824-41340r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41340 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $36,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Enticing Near-Gem Zacatecas Cuartillo, MEXICO. Zacatecas. 1/4 Real, 1824. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-64. This stunning Cuartillo emanates from the VERY RARE first date of issue for Zacatecas. A near-Gem survivor, it exhibits an impressively crisp strike. Extremely brilliant and evocatively colored with mint red and burnished copper swirling about. A short flan crack around 11 o'clock is noted for completeness. Certainly among the finest examples available of the type for any date, this minor is sure to attract quality-conscious collectors. From the EMO Collection." This specimen is one of a series of brass quarter reales issued 1825-64 by the "free and sovereign" state of Zacatecas. This specimen may have been a presentation piece as fully struck, uncirculated specimens with mint luster are virtually unknown.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: brass.

Catalog reference: EMO-3168 (Plate coin); KM-366.
