Aureo sale 243, lot 693

This specimen was lot 693 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 1,500 € (about US$2,266 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"1790. Carlos IV. México. FM. 2 reales. Busto de Carlos III. Ordinal IV. Muy bella. Brillo original. Muy rara así. EBC+. (two reales of 1790, king's ordinal 'IV', bust of Charles III, Mexico mint. Very nice, original luster, very rare thus, choice extremely fine.)"

It is one of a series minted 1789-90 at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV while regular dies were being designed in Madrid. The date is common, assayer FM is recorded for 1784-1801.
