Mexico 1762-Mo MM 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 24663 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $8,225. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1762 Mo-MM, AU53 NGC. Only light wear with pleasing toning, especially on the reverse. This first date of the rare and sought-after Rat Nose type of the Mexico City mint. Rated Rara in Calico's La Onza. From the collection of Donald E. Bently, sold for the benefit of the Bently Foundation." This type is noted for 1762-71 and is quite rare despite the ten years of production. In 1772, Mexican gold coins were reduced to 0.875 fine and older coins may have been melted.
