This specimen was lot 23401 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $9,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1762-J, AU55 NGC, first bust type with long curled peruke. A choice example with remarkably sharp details and virtually full mint brilliance. Very rare and desirable in this superior quality." This type was issued 1760-63 only and is rare. Note the use of Ferdinand's bust with Charles' name. With the exception of a hoard of 1750-51 four and eight escudos found some years ago, Chilean gold coinage is rare prior to the 1770's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12754, KM 20.
