Mexico 1629-Mo D 8 reales
This specimen was lot 72289 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, 1629-Mo D. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details. A boldly struck Cob, toned almost black on the obverse, with visible mintmark, assayer, and date. The reverse exhibits the "Golden Fleece" Counterstamp, indicating approval for use in Brabant, Spanish Netherlands (by Decree of 1 October, 1650), at a value of 48 Patards. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." The regular cobs were struck for the entire length of the reign of Philip IV. Assayer D is known for 1618-34. Cayón reports a 1629/8 overdate. Round "royals" are known but all are rare, rarer than the equivalent Bolivian royals.
