Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71652
SB1122-71652r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71652 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1623/2/1-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer D. Philip IV. PCGS EF-40. This Cob is struck on an irregular and somewhat short planchet that have resulted in some large areas of flatness. The obverse preserves the last digits of the date, however, which is evidently an interesting double overdate. The reverse is rather messy but shows an unbroken cross with castles and lions. A crude but charming piece with attractive even gray toning. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1618-34 with assayer "D". Few of these early cobs have legible dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.56 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-5995 (overdate), KM-38; Cal-1055.
