from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 703

This specimen was lot 703 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 reales, 1623/2D, rare. Very choice full inner details enhanced by dark, contrasting toning, the oMD (with D/D) particularly bold, nice cross and shield, bold king's ordinal IIII, clear date and overdate, AXF overall." This type was struck 1621-66 in Mexico City and is not rare except in high grade. The vast majority lack dates. Assayer D is listed for 1618-34.
