Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 607
Sed36-0607r.jpg

This specimen was lot 607 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1623 (date as 16ZIII) T, quadrants of cross transposed, very rare, ex-Ponte. Choice full shield with transposed lions and castles, full P and clear T to left, off-center full cross (quadrants transposed) with very clear III of date visible (as the mint lacked a "3" punch), VF with light toning, scratches and hole to left of cross, minor natural edge-crack. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to Sedwick Auction 4 (lot 700)." This type was struck 1622-47, throughout the first part of the reign of Philip IV. Dates were added in 1617; even so, many are so crudely made that the dates are not legible. This type is rare; it was never made in large quantities and nearly all melted down in the great remintage of 1649-52 when the debased cobs were called in.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.39 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-unlisted; S-P22a; KM-17; Cal-unl (Type 279).
