Mexico 1622-Mo D 4 reales
This specimen was lot 142 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 4 reales, 1622/1/0 D, unique. Very choice example with no corrosion at all, lovely toning all over, full shield and cross (some flat spots), clear oMD and denomination 4, but of course the most important feature is the clear date ZZ/I/O/* (first we have seen). With certificate and original Spink box and small certificate. Recovered from 'Lucayan Beach Wreck,' sunk ca. 1628 off Grand Bahama Island." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1618-34 with assayer "D". Few specimens of this type have legible dates, making an assembly of all the dates very challenging.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.53 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.43 grams.
