Ponterio sale 150, lot 9119
from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 2282
SB122-2282r.jpg

The first coin was lot 9119 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $402.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Carlos and Johanna, Late Series. 1 Real Assayer L (L-M), ND (154?-1552 or 1553). Deep sharp strike, nice legends, lustrous surfaces. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The second specimen was lot 2282 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Cob Real, ND (1542-55)-L M. Mexico City Mint. Carlos & Johanna. NGC MS-63. A beautifully preserved example of the type with boldly struck central devices exhibiting lovely rich old envelope patina with a slight iridescent sheen that pops out when rotated in the light. Vastly superior than normally encountered and as such should be considered VERY RARE in this state of preservation. From the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation." The "Carlos and Johanna" coinage of 1536-55 is complicated and difficult to disentangle as records are sparse and the coins are not dated. Ponterio[1] gives details of the latest research. The early series of 1536-41 is rare in all denominations.

Recorded mintage: Unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, .100 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 9; Nesmith-80; Cal-type-103#143a, Cayón-3046; the second specimen Nesmith-80a; Cal-73.
