Mantua 1612 tallero Dav-3932
This specimen was lot 1802 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 10,500 CHF (about US$13,000 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Mantua Francesco IV. Gonzaga, 1612. Ducatone 1612. Selten. Sehr schön. (duchy of Mantua, Francis IV Gonzaga, ducatone of 1612, rare, very fine.)"
This tallero of 120 soldi is listed as very rare. Most Mantuan coinage is scarce but this one is likely very rare by virtue of the brief reign of the duke Francesco IV Gonzaga, who ruled some ten months. We follow the SCWC in calling this a tallero rather than a ducatone as a tallero was around 28 g (110 soldi) whereas the ducatone was usually over 30 g (120 soldi, see Dav-3931).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 26.88 g.
