Mantua (1589-1608) ducatone Dav-8296
This specimen was lot 2998 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$5,353 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Mantova, Vincenzo I. Gonzaga, 1587-1612. Ducatone o. J. (1589-1608), Casale. Geharnischtes Hüftbild nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen auf einer Volutenkartusche und mit der Kette vom Goldenen Vlies, unten X-II. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleine Kratzer im Avers (undated ducatone, Casale mint. Obverse: armored haf-length bust right; reverse: crowned arms in a scrolled cartouche with the jewels of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Small scratches on obverse).
In der zweiten Ausgabe von Alberto Varesi "Monete Italiane Regionali, Lombardia, zecce minori" ist das Stück nicht mehr unter Mantua aufgeführt, sondern wird aufgrund der Wertbezeichnung X-II (12 Bianchi) auf der Rückseite Casale zugeschrieben. (In the second edition of Varesi's Monete Italiane Regionali, Lombardia, zecce minori, this piece is no longer listed under Mantua but under Casale.)"
This undated crown is very similar to Dav-8295. It is still listed in the SCWC under Mantua. The Gonzaga family managed to hold onto some autonomy as dukes of Mantua until its extinction in 1707, when the duchy fell to the Austrians.
